In lab automation environment for drug discovery, many devices such as incubators, centrifuges, or dispensers have to be operated by a control PC. When replacing a device, the new device offers the same or similar functionality, but the access to it is through a different software control interface if not even hardware interface. So each time a device has to be replaced, the applier has to develop an according driver for it. This leads to high integration efforts for the appliers. The SiLA Initiative aims to develop a standard for the communication to achieve rapid integration of devices. Therefore many challenges have to be considered. Competing suppliers add specific functionalities to their devices, the timing of commands can be totally different, and the parameters of commands might be restricted in their ranges, to name just a few of the challenges. This talk will give an overview over the current ideas and results of SiLA. Referent:
Dr. Henning Bär (infoteam AG Schweiz)
Henning Bär studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Brunswick and at Karlsruhe University. He wrote his diploma thesis at Hitachi America Ltd. about automotive multimedia. Afterwards he did his PhD in the department of computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Since 2007 he is working for infoteam Software in Switzerland. There he leads a workgroup for the standardization effort SiLA. Additionally he is involved in some projects of the field of lab automation.
