IEC 61131-3 is the globally relevant standard for developing programmable logic controllers (PLCs). It defines text-based and graphic languages.

As a result of this standardisation, functions and function blocks can be employed in all languages that are written in one of the other languages or made available by the PLC manufacturer in the form of software libraries without source code.
