IEC 61508 is an international standard for the development of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety-related systems (E/E/PES). The standard can be applied to all safety-related systems which contain (E/E/PES) components and which pose a significant risk to individuals or the environment if they fail. IEC 61508 is designated as a “basic functional safety standard” and is used as a basis for application-specific standards. With regard to the performance level (PL) of a device, it covers the easier-to-apply EN ISO 13849-1 almost completely. A safety integrity level (SIL) can be converted directly into a PL.
