Functional safety for IEC 61508 and DIN EN 50128

IEC 61508 is an international standard for the development of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety-related systems (E/E/PES). The standard can be applied to all safety-related systems which contain (E/E/PES) components and which pose a significant risk to individuals or the environment if they fail. IEC 61508 is designated as a “basic functional safety standard” and is used as a basis for application-specific standards. With regard to the performance level (PL) of a device, it covers the easier-to-apply EN ISO 13849-1 almost completely. A safety integrity level (SIL) can be converted directly into a PL.

infoteam Software AG offers products and services for the development of systems which place particular requirements on functional safety.

IEC 61508 and infoteam – we know how!

Our customers are the leading global manufacturers of industrial control systems, drive technology and sensors. These control systems ensure that machines throughout automation technology run safely day after day.
infoteam's safety competence encompasses functional safety management, the implementation of individual software in accordance with the functional safety management directives (IEC 61508) and the realisation of system software for safety-related control systems.

Our certified FSM engineers and safety specialists boast a wealth of experience in a whole range of (safety-related) automation technology fields.

The definition of our functional safety process model (iFSM) based on the Team Foundation Server® and the corresponding editor, developed in accordance with IEC 61508, are a shining example of how infoteam's safety expertise is also employed in customer projects.
infoteam takes care of the realisation of safety projects for its customers: We develop tools for the development of safety-related software for you.

Certified software development process in accordance with IEC 61508

If your development process does not comply with the requirements of IEC 61508, we can offer you a certified safety process. Our iFSM (infoteam Functional Safety Management) project guidelines are certified in accordance with IEC 61508 up to SIL 3 by TÜV Süd and support you in the standard-compliant documentation and performance of projects in accordance with the functional safety management specifications. Typically, we adapt the iFSM to the specific requirements of our customers. Are you already experienced in the development of devices in accordance with IEC 61508? If so, we can integrate our service into your development process seamlessly. The use of already certified components reduces the time requirements and costs involved in developing a safety control system considerably as well as minimising the project risk.

With the help of its infoteam Functional Safety Control Concept (iFSCC), infoteam Software AG develops safe control systems to suit the customer's individual requirements – efficiently and with minimal risks.

To do so, infoteam offers a combination of certified hardware, a certified operating system, a certified development process and a certified programming environment.

The iFSCC reference system is based on the following components:

  • hardware from MEN Mikro Elektronik GmbH (DIN EN 50128: SIL 4),
  • Neutrino® RTOS Safe Kernel real-time operating system from QNX® (IEC 61508: SIL 3; EN ISO 13849 : PLe )
  • FlexiSafe® firmware from ISaGRAF (IEC 61508: SIL 3; DIN EN 13849: PL; DIN EN 50128: SIL 4)

infoteam combines all of the above-mentioned system architecture components to create customer-specific solutions.

What is DIN EN 50128?

DIN EN 50128 is a European standard for safety-related software in the railway industry, both with respect to specific stretches and specific trains. It stipulates the creation of a complete, unambiguous and testable software requirement specification.

This specification must be refined step by step from the software architecture to the software design right up to the software module design. This is followed by coding. Every step must be documented. The results of every step must be verified.

DIN EN 50128 and infoteam – we know how!

infoteam develops software for the leading manufacturers in the railway industry. Our customers' control solutions ensure the safe, interruption-free operation of trains, across the globe, day after day.

The safety experts at infoteam boast many years of experience in the field of safety-related automation technology for railway applications. Alongside functional safety management and the implementation of individual hardware specially developed for railway applications in accordance with the functional safety management regulations as per DIN EN 50128, our competence with regard to standards also encompasses the realisation of system software for safety-critical control systems.

We offer our customers support in the realisation of safety projects and tools for the development of safety-related software.

Product range for functional safety

With the Cause and Effect (C&E) Editor  infoteam offers a tool which significantly simplifies the development and approval of safety functions since the C&E charts are used for both the specification and the safety case. Generating PLC programs from the C&E charts eliminates the need for manual procedures when implementing the specification in the program and analysing the program for safety case.
