Safety functions with the Cause and Effect Editor

With its Cause and Effect Editor, infoteam provides a tool that significantly streamlines the process of developing and accepting safety functions. The charts created with the editor can be used for both the specification and the safety case.

Generation of PLC programs from the C&E charts negates the need for manual realisation of the specification into the program in the scope of the safety case just as in the analysis of the program.

With its clear interfaces, the C&E Editor is designed for integration in programming systems from a wide range control system manufacturers. It features simple syntax and semantics that do not contain any hidden logic.

Established in process and procedure technology

Manually created C&E charts have long been used in process technology. As C&E charts are particularly suitable for emergency shutdown systems (ESD), tool support for C&E charts is now increasingly required, across all sectors, starting from the oil and gas as well as the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The objective in this case is always the considerable reduction of energy costs while simultaneously improving quality significantly.

A C&E chart is a tabulation of logical connections between causes and effects. The aim of this notation is clear and transparent visualisation of cause and effect relationships. The definition of the time-based processing makes it possible to generate a PLC program from the charts.

The C&E Editor does not replace the IEC 61131-3 programming languages for implementing the system functions in the programming systems. It is an expansion for the creation of safety functions.

The C&E Editor from infoteam is a .NET application and can be integrated in any Microsoft-based programming system. The considerable adaptation involves the creation of a postprocessor for the language of the programming system, e.g., structured text (ST) or function block diagram (FBD), into which the C&E charts can be translated.

Clear interfaces | Simple syntax

With the C&E Editor you can even implement safety functions without a single line of code. Cut the time and costs involved in your safety case, improve the documentation of your safety functions and reduce your administrative efforts for bug fixing and troubleshooting at the same time.

The most important facts about C&E Editor:

  • Syntax and semantics coordinated in VDI/VDE GMA Technical Committee 1.50
  • Standard-compliant development in accordance with IEC 61508, IEC 61511 (SIL 3)
  • Validation covers all inputs and data made available on the interfaces
  • Interfaces to programming system in form of variable, program code, monitoring (OPC) and on request
  • Internal data management in the form of XML

You can find further information on the C&E Editor from infoteam in our white paper, which is available to download here.
